I’d Like to Buy an Enemy – Gainesville, FL

Sponsored by Emmanuel Mennonite Church and Peace Center, I'd Like to Buy an Enemy is coming to the Hippodrome Theatre Cinema in Gainesville, FL on February 19, 2013 at 7:00pm.

Starring Ted & Company TheaterWorks actors Ted Swartz and Tim Ruebke, this thought-provoking show allows us to laugh at ourselves, while engaging us to think about the place of the US in the world, to confront the fear that is such a large part of our culture, and to consider how we can work for peace and justice in this country and in the world.

In this hilarious and poignant satire we find a talking banana sharing his personal story about fair trade practices, listen to two distinguished scholars who revert to primitive means of retaliation while explaining cycles of violence, and are welcomed into the shop of a persuasive salesperson who insists on our need to buy an enemy to ensure “optimistic living and comfortable maintenance of the American Dream.”

You will certainly laugh, but you will also be challenged to reflect on the biases and unjust practices that pervade the American mentality, and be energized to find creative ways to address issues of peace and justice in your communities and beyond.  It is a show that speaks across religions, denominations, generations and backgrounds, for people who aim to be the change we seek.
