Portraits From the Human Faces Tour – Book Release and Performance!

Please join us on Saturday, January 18, 2020 @ 7:30 pm at Martin Chapel at EMU (in the Seminary building) 1200 Park Rd., Harrisonburg, VA for the premiere release of our new book, Portraits From the Human Faces Tour, by Ted Swartz, Valerie Luna Serrels, with photos by Steven Stauffer, along with a presentation by Ted, at Martin Chapel at EMU. This event is free and open to the public! Books will be available for purchase and donations will also graciously be accepted to help cover the cost of this event and to fund further performances at churches, mental health organizations and others across North America.

The event will include a multi-media performance by Ted rooted in his relationship with theater partner and best friend, Lee Eshleman, who died by suicide following a battle with bipolar disorder in 2007. This event focuses on what happened after that origin story following a tour of his play Laughter Is Sacred Space (dubbed the Human Faces Tour) in 2016-17 chronicling Ted’s journey through grief, loss, and renewal, and on how this book came to be, with sharing from Ted, Steven and Valerie and a talk-back with all of them and Beth Daugherty, publishing consultant.
The book is a visual and heartfelt addition to the important conversation around the mental health crisis in this country that has resulted in an increase of suicides and deeper loss of connection to soul. Through striking black and white portraits and poignant stories, we bear witness to the struggles and incredible resilience of a select number of audience members whose courage led them to participate in this project.
